Bitcoin Core descends directly from the software Satoshi released in 2009 — a full node and wallet, and in practice the definition of Bitcoin's rules in running code. Free. Open source. Owned by no company; maintained by volunteer and sponsored developers. Most nodes run it. It changes slowly, on purpose: a bug here would not crash an app. It would threaten a money.

Why it matters

• Its checking code is the rulebook other software must match.
• Anyone can read it, audit it, and propose changes — people do.
• Its caution is a virtue: boring software, high-stakes job.

Not to be confused with

• "The Core team controls Bitcoin" — nodes choose what they run; Core can't force an upgrade on anyone.
