Liquid
A faster, more private side network for bitcoin, run by a group of companies you trust.
In plain words
Liquid is a separate chain where bitcoin moves as L-BTC. Lock coins on Bitcoin, and the same amount is issued on Liquid; burn L-BTC to come back. Blocks arrive every minute, and amounts are hidden from onlookers. The price is trust: no miners here — a federation of companies signs the blocks and holds the locked coins. That makes Liquid honest about what it is: a convenience layer for exchanges and traders, not a place for sovereignty.
Why it matters
- Shows the trade Bitcoin refuses: speed and privacy bought with trust in a consortium.
- Useful for fast transfers between exchanges and for confidential amounts.
- "On a sidechain" means someone else holds the real coins. Remember it.
Numbers that matter
- ~1 minute — Liquid's block interval.
- 2018 — launched.
Not to be confused with
- Lightning — no federation; its security comes from Bitcoin's own rules.
- Liquidity — a Lightning term; same word, unrelated meaning.
