Unit bias

The feeling that one whole coin is the unit that counts. It isn't.

In plain words

Unit bias is the instinct that owning less than one whole thing barely counts — and at bitcoin's price, that instinct whispers "too late." But the whole coin is a bookkeeping convention. Bitcoin's real unit is the satoshi: 100 million per coin, every one divisible, spendable, yours. Nobody buys "a whole gold"; nobody needs a whole bitcoin. There are 21 million coins but 2.1 quadrillion sats — the ledger was built for fractions from day one.

Why it matters

  • "Too expensive" is usually unit bias doing the arithmetic.
  • The protocol itself counts only sats — the "coin" exists in interfaces.
  • Marketing exploits it: whole units of a cheap coin feel richer than sats of a scarce one.

Numbers that matter

  • 100,000,000 — satoshis in one bitcoin.
  • 2.1 quadrillion — total satoshis, ever.
